One of the many questions answered by the Share of Ear® study from Edison Research is, “What percent of daily listening time do those in the U.S. age 13+ spend with various audio sources?” The answers can be found in the Share of Ear Audio Dial™, updated below with the most recent data from the Q4 2023 survey.
Share of Ear is the only measurement of the entire audio space. The graph below breaks out the percentage of total daily audio consumption that is spent with each type of audio.
How to read: The average person in the U.S. spends 20% of their daily audio time listening
to streaming music.
Since our third quarter update:
- AM/FM Radio falls one point to 36%
- Streaming Music gains one point and hits the 20% threshold for the first time
- Owned music (listening to CDs, vinyl, owned digital files, etc.) drops one point
- Other changes are accounted for by rounding
AM/FM Radio continues to make up the largest share of listening, accounting for more than one-third of daily time with audio among those age 13+. The vast majority of that listening (31 percentage points) is to AM/FM over-the air signals.
Share of Ear began in 2014, so this year marks this landmark research’s tenth birthday. Watch this space for special reports on how Share of Ear has chronicled changes in the audio space over this dynamic decade.
