As is the custom in many schools, the pre-holiday period is filled with performances where students showcase what they have learned. Some of the most endearing assemblies come from the five-year-olds who are justifiably excited to show off their skills.

For our final Insight of 2024, we celebrate the achievements of our favorite five-year-old, Edison Podcast Metrics™, as we also highlight how the service has tracked the incredible growth of five specific shows.

Our first ranking of podcasts from Edison Podcast Metrics was published based on surveys of weekly podcast listeners in Q3 and Q4 of 2019. Since the inception of the service, we have published rankings quarterly, and have amassed data from surveying over 72,000 weekly podcast listeners. Measurement began with listeners age 18+, and since 2021 has included those ages 13-17 as well. We are thrilled to be able to gather data on weekly podcast listeners: from their demographics to their listening preferences to their buying habits.

What might not be so obvious from seeing show data quarter after quarter where The Joe Rogan ExperienceCrime Junkie, and The Daily sit at the top, is the remarkable ascent of certain shows through the rankings.

This Past Weekend w/Theo Von was outside of the Top 100 podcasts in 2019, sitting at #128, and fell several ranks before beginning a climb into the Top 50 in 2022. This show now takes the #9 spot in the most recent data.

Bad Friends debuted in 2020 in the #413 spot, rising quickly in the next year and then steadily through the next three years, and is currently ranked #16.

Rotten Mango also debuted in 2020 at #142, steadily rising throughout the years, and now sits at #20.

Other shows have made notable jumps in the rankings in the past two years. Club Shay Shay debuted in 2020, ranking outside of the Top 500, and is now #12.

In 2022, New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce also debuted outside of the Top 500 shows, and since then has made an astonishing climb to #10.

We hope you feel as inspired by these success stories as we do, and we are looking forward to seeing even more new podcasts pop into the Edison Podcast Metrics Top 50 over time. Thank you for your support and for celebrating the first five years of Edison Podcast Metrics with us!

Edison Podcast Metrics Methodology Notes:
1. Rankings are all-inclusive in that they measure EVERY show reported by weekly podcast listeners. This has always been a unique characteristic of our service, which measures listening, not downloads. This survey research does not rely on podcast producers or networks to report data for their shows.
2. Although we release Top 50 rankings publicly for the benefit of the industry, subscribers have access to listening and listener data on all shows. Published rankings only highlight a fraction of available data.
